Who Are We?
We don't know.
But we're trying to find out.
Elegy 'formally' formed at Italia Conti Acting in 2018, however the initial seed for what would become the company goes back to 2012, where the human being called Matthew Gouldesbrough started writing and directing his own work. After meeting other human beings at drama school, the company formed, with a current interest in text based work.
We believe words, not just deeds, can change the world.
We always start with the text, and then we ask:
'Why are we telling this story?' which usually then leads us to 'How do we tell this story?'
Which leads us to develop work that has ranged from a high energy, physical farce to genre-melding live video.
We never stop questioning the script - editing, trimming, re-writing right up until the performance and beyond. Because if what we are saying isn't important, then what's the point?
The company is led by Matthew Gouldesbrough, but works with a wonderful platform of associates to bring it's work to life.
Matthew trained as an actor at both Rose Bruford and Italia Conti Acting, as well as spending time with the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. He has performed in the West End and around the country, and founded Elegy. His interests lie in new writing and asking uncomfortable questions of the status quo.
Carol trained as an opera singer at the Royal Academy of Music, and has worked internationally as an award winning soloist, as well as running her own opera company 'Heart of England Opera' before making the move into teaching. Her interests lie in supporting young artists and she works for the company in a support role; we are very lucky to have her!
Patrick trained as an actor and performed across the country before making the move in to directing. His shows have been seen in London venues as well as theatres across the nation. Recent directing work includes new writing pieces “DMC” by Amy Kitts, and “Shadow Folk” by Kate Donnachie. His interests lie in new writing and developing pieces from the page with writers.
Holly trained as an actor at Italia Conti Acting.
Alamo is a London based actor who trained as an actor at Rose Bruford. His interests lie in re-imagininge classic works, particularly those of Chekov and Shakespeare.
